The Mississippi Resource Center of the Delta Region AIDS Education and Training Center (ETC) is offering a two-day program for community providers on the delivery of primary care for HIV-infected patients. This intensive, comprehensive course is an ongoing program and is held three times a year. Please call (601) 984-5542 for program dates.

SPONSORS: The University of Mississippi Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Delta Region AIDS Education and Training Center and the University of Mississippi Medical Center Division of Continuing Health Professional Education.

REGISTRATION: Registration includes issuance of appropriate professional credit. FEES AND CANCELLATION POLICY: The cost of the two-day course is $125.  The participating practitioner is responsible for transportation, hotel and meal costs incurred. Cancellations may be made up to 5 days prior to this program. Fees may be transferred to the next offering of this program.

PROGRAM GOAL: The goal of the program is to assist in training interested practitioners to provide comprehensive ambulatory care to their HIV-infected patients, to stimulate continued professional growth through the utilization of secondary and tertiary referral/consultative resources and services, and to ultimately increase the number of primary care practitioners working with HIV-infected patients in Mississippi.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: At the end of training, participants will be able to:

• discuss the course fundamentals;
• integrate the concepts of epidemiology, etiology, and transmission of HIV infection/disease;
• identify the basic pathogenesis of HIV disease;
• provide appropriate initial evaluation and medical treatment of HIV infected adults;
• determine appropriate antiretroviral interventions for the early symptomatic period of HIV disease;
• discuss the educational and medical aspects of HIV counseling, testing, and risk assessment;
• demonstrate provision of sexual risk prevention counseling to HIV positive clientele;
• describe opportunistic infections with appropriate pharmacological prophylaxis recommendations;
• discuss day one of the program and the evaluation tools;
• recognize common oral health conditions of HIV positive dental patients;
• discuss metabolic conditions caused by ART, host factors, HIV disease, or a combination of these;
• determine appropriate antiretroviral interventions for the early symptomatic period of HIV disease;
• identify the challenges inherent in caring for women and children with HIV disease;
• discuss case-based antiretroviral treatment strategies involved in HIV positive individuals;
• formalize an assessment with intervention for clinical, mental, social, and cultural dimensions of HIV disease through comprehensive clinical case management;
• identify factors that affect adherence to antiretroviral regimens and propose some methods to influence adherence; and
• discuss day two of the program and the evaluation tools.

AMA (Physicians) – The University of Mississippi School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

As an organization accredited for continuing medical education, the University of Mississippi School of Medicine designates this continuing medical education activity for a maximum of 15.5 AMA PRA category 1 credits. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he or she actually spent in the educational activity.

ADA/AGD (Dental) – The University of Mississippi School of Dentistry is recognized as an approved provider of continuing dental education by the American Dental Association Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) and the Association of Continuing Dental Education (ACDE). Formal continuing education programs of the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry are accepted by AGD for Fellowship/Mastership credit. The University of Mississippi School of Dentistry approves this course for 15.5 hours of dental continuing education credit.

MNF (Nursing) – The University of Mississippi School of Nursing Continuing Education Program is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Mississippi Nurses Foundation, which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. As an approved provider, the University of Mississippi School of Nursing designates this offering as meeting the criteria for 18.5 contact hours. Participation in and successful completion of this activity will be determined by the participant signing in, attending the sessions for which credit is desired, and returning the completed evaluation tool. Each participant should claim only those hours of credit that he or she actually spends in the educational activity.

Accredited status refers only to continuing nursing education activities and does not imply ANCC Commission on Accreditation approval or endorsement of any commercial products.

ACPE (Pharmacists) – The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. A credit of 15.5 hours of continuing pharmaceutical education credit will be awarded for this program. To obtain credit for this program, attendees must sign in at the beginning of the program and complete a program evaluation at the conclusion.
